The Cheviot Hills and the unspoilt Berwickshire and Northumberland coast provide wonderful opportunities for both walking and just enjoying a quiet time on pristine beaches. The drive across the tidal causeway to Holy Island makes a unique experience if combined with a visit to Lindisfarne Castle and Priory. |

The sea bird sanctuaries of the Farne Islands and St Abbs head are well worth a visit. There is an abundance of wild life to be discovered along the banks of our rivers and their tributaries. Otters flourish in the clear waters while dippers forage for insect lavae by diving beneath the swift streams. Aquatic life abounds, supporting a huge run of salmon which begin entering the Tweed in the early Spring with the main run of fish reaching a climax in the Autumn. The salmon provide a major source of income for the valley and surrounding areas, the Tweed being one of the four major salmon fisheries in the country. The Border region is a mecca for horses and horse riding. There is a strong tradition of riding the bounds usually expressed as common ridings. Each of the Border towns has its common riding festival during the summer. This may last a whole week and include sports, musical events and street parties in addition to the ridings themselves. Kelso National Hunt racing takes place in Kelso throughout the season. |
